How To Stay Empowered When Everyone Around You Is Losing It
There’s something that happens when you’re walking your path, chasing your goals, and doing the inner work—and suddenly, someone else’s mood swings into your space and knocks you off track.
It’s sneaky.
It’s subtle.
And if you’re not onto it, it can completely derail your energy, your focus, and your power.
This episode came from fire. Literal keyboard-smashing frustration after three separate incidents in one day reminded me just how easy it is to slip out of alignment—and how powerful it is when you catch yourself and shift.
So here’s the story...
The Pattern That Caught Me Out (Again)
One of the people in my life came at me with a negative attitude and veiled blame.
Another threw out a passive-aggressive “I understand” that landed like an emotional slap.
And the third—a paddling crew member—basically picked a fight before the sun was even up, accusing me of messing with training times when she hadn’t even read the full message thread.
None of these people did anything to me. That’s not the point.
The point is I let it affect me.
I let their energy enter my space.
I gave away my power—temporarily.
But here’s the gold: I saw it.
And awareness is the beginning of everything.
How I Took My Power Back (Mid-Drama)
After the early morning confrontation, I had a choice.
I could spend the next two hours paddling 18km stewing in my own frustration and replaying imaginary comebacks in my head…
Or—I could let it go.
I could return to my body, return to my purpose, and refocus on why I was there in the first place: to train, to prepare for Nationals, and to feel strong in my body and connected to my crew.
I didn’t just let it go mentally—I reset my emotional state physically using a technique I teach inside the Life Coach Gold Certification. It’s a simple, practical exercise you can do anywhere, anytime to feel the truth of how your emotions impact your strength.
Try This: The Emotional Strength Muscle Test
This is one of my favourite tools for real-time alignment.
Step 1: Make a circle with the thumb and pointer finger of your left hand (like an “OK” sign).
Step 2: Use the index finger of your right hand to try and break that circle apart.
First, do it while thinking of something negative—something that gets you fired up or upset. Notice how easily the circle breaks.
Now do it again, but this time think of something joyful, exciting, or empowering. Maybe a recent win, a moment of laughter, or the feeling of achieving a goal. Try to break the circle again—and notice how much stronger it feels.
💥 That’s not just in your head. That’s your nervous system responding to your emotional state.
Positive emotions = strength.
Negative emotions = weakness.
It’s a real-time reminder: your emotions affect everything—including your physical power.
Staying in Your Lane Is a Leadership Move
After that moment, I chose peace. Not because I’m weak. Not because I’m avoiding conflict. But because I refuse to weaken myself to match someone else’s chaos.
And that’s the invitation here.
We live in a world where people are constantly projecting, reacting, and externalising their pain. But you don’t have to take it on. You don’t have to carry it. You don’t have to be the emotional sponge for other people’s bad days.
You can:
Have empathy without abandoning yourself
Support others without sacrificing your vision
Stay kind without being a punching bag
And when you do that—when you hold your line and stay in your lane—you don’t just protect your peace. You lead by example. You become the lighthouse. You show others what's possible.
This Isn’t About Being Perfect. It’s About Being Powerful.
I still catch myself slipping.
I still have moments of emotional messiness (don’t we all?).
But what I’ve built are tools—the ability to notice, reset, and realign quickly.
